Under-18s through to Cup quarters

Dan Kostadinov sunk six three pointers as Oaklands Wolves reached the Under-18 National Cup quarter-finals with a 97-88 victory as Ipswich on Sunday.

Liam Jefferson's side are the only team in the competition who do not play in a league, with the players turning out in the senior divisions of the National League, and they have had to win on the road four times on their way to a home last eight game against either Charnwood Riders or Ballers Heaven.

Kostadinov scored from downtown to get Wolves off the mark, and went on to lead his side with 27 points while Emmanuel Orisunmibola added 20 and Aydan Moloney 15.

Ipswich shaded a high-scoring first period 28-27 before a 32-24 second frame saw Wolves take a seven point lead into the locker room at half-time and they won each of the third and fourth quarters by a point to seal the win.

The previous day had seen the majority of the U-18 side make the short trip to University of Herts where they went down 104-85 against hosts Storm despite a 37 point haul from La'Quarne Sayles.

Wolves matched the university team in the first half, sharing 40 opening quarter points before going into the half-time break 47-45 ahead. But a 23-16 third period put Storm in control and they wrapped up the victory with a 36-22 fourth period.

Lanre Pratt added 16 points and Moloney nine

There was also a derby defeat for Wolves' Division Two Women's side as they suffered a heart-breaking 41-40 home loss against Hemel Storm on Sunday afternoon.

Shanice Beckford-Norton's side looked to have survived a second period drought where they scored only one point in nine minutes and had a chance to win the game before Paris Mitchell-Tyson's lay-up fell short.

Caitlin Ryan hit a triple to open the scoring for Wolves and they led 11-8 at the first break before suffering a scoring slump in the second period to trail 22-15 at half-time with only Malia Lawal scoring from open play.

Tiff Tyson scored from downtown to get Wolves' offence moving in the second half, but they could only share 22 third period points to still trail by seven at the final break. Ryan narrowed the gap with a three to open the fourth period but they had left themselves too much to do as Amye Swinney missed a pair at the foul line to allow Storm to take the win..

Captain Ryan led Wolves with ten points five assists, four steals and three blocks while Amye Swinney had nine points and 11 blocks. Ella Brown had seven points and as many rebounds.

The U-18 women made it three wins from as many games, as they survived a late comeback from hosts Canterbury Crusaders to won 72-66.

Wolves trailed 18-14 at the first break but outscored the Kent side 18-8 and 20-11 in the middle two periods before the hosts won the final frame 29-20.
